Measuring your dogs head and neck accurately is essential to ensure a proper fit for Slip Over or Martingale Style Collars
You'll Need:
* A Flexible measuring tape
* A piece of string or ribbon (if you don't have a measuring tape)
Measuring Tape Method
Using a soft tape measure or piece of string* do the following to measure for a Pull Over the Head or Martingale Style Collar:
Head Size First: From under the dog’s throat, over the ears to top of head (this is the size of the actual head) This will give you the largest size needed to slip collar over head and ears for a proper fit
Neck Size Next: Place tape around your dogs neck where the collar would normally sit. Make sure tape is snug but not too tight. You should be able to slip a finger between the tape and your dog's neck.
Read the measurement in inches where the end of the tape meets the rest of the tape. This measurement is your dog's neck size.
Sting or Ribbon Method:
If you do not have a measuring tape you can use a piece of string or ribbon.
Wrap the string or ribbon around your dogs neck just like you would with the measuring tape.
Mark the point where the string or ribbon overlaps.
Lay the sting or ribbon on flat surface and use a ruler to measure. Regardless of the method you use it is a good idea to measure a couple times to ensure accuracy. Depending on how tight you want to have your collar you can add about 1-2 inches for a size that will allow your dog to move comfortably.
